Rumtek Buddhist Monastery
India Buddhist tour takes the tourists to Rumtek Monastery located in Sikkim, one of the north-eastern states of India. It was originally founded by 9th Karamapa Wangchuk Dorje in 16th century and it has been the main centre of the Karma Kagyu lineage in Sikkim. The 16th Karampa fled Tibet in 1959 and settled in this monastery. The monastery was in ruins yet the16th Karampa rebuilt the monastery. Now it is the largest monastery in Sikkim.
The ambience of the monastery is breathtakingly beautiful, it overlooks the flowing streams, mountains and a river seen below. The Sikkim royal family and the Indian Government supported the Karmapa to rebuild the monastery. Sacred relics are brought from the seat of the Karmapa located in Tibet. A college namely Karma Shri Nalanda Institute for Higher Buddhist Studies is located in front of the building of the monastery.

The Rumtek Monastery or the Dharma Chakra Center is a home to the lamas of the Kagyu lineage. Most of the important relics related to Buddhism are preserved at this monastery. During summer and winter, the monastery celebrates festivals with great vibe and color. Touring the Rumtek monastery one can explore the rituals and practices of the monks who belong to Karma Kagyu lineage.
Sikkim is now one of the most visited hill destinations in India, the capital of the state Gangtok is just about 24 kms away from the Rumtek Monastery. Gangtok is an exotic hill station and toured by a large number of tourists throughout the year. ![]()
