Namgyal Monastery
Namgyal Monastery is known all over the world for its Namgyal Monastery Institute of Buddhist Studies which has a branch in New York also. There is a history to tell behind the establishment of Namgyal Monastery in Dharamsala, Himachal Pradesh. This monastery is an imitation of the original Namgyal Monastery of Lhasa in Tibet which was founded by the second Dalai Lama, Gendun Gyatso in the 16th century. The Tibet Namgyal was situated in Lhasa next to the Potala Palace, the private residence of the Dalai Lamas and it has been playing an important part in the Tibetan religious establishment.
Namgyal Monks into Exile - the result was the foundation of Namgyal Monastery :China invaded Tibet in 1959 and as a result of Chinese invasion His Holiness, the 14th Dalai Lama and a lakh of Tibetans took refugee in India. A total of 55 monks were the refugees. Dalai Lama was granted refuge in Dharamsala and then His Holiness established the Namgyal Monastery near the residence of his Holiness, Dalai Lama. Now Namgyal Monastery is the major centre of Tibetan religious, artistic and intellectual traditions. Now it is the only monastery in India which offers Phd in tantra and sutra in Buddhist studies. Since it inception the monks of Namgyal Monastery has visited various places of the world to spread the Tibetan art and culture. Now Namgyal Institute has a branch namely Namgyal Monastery Institute of Buddhist Studies in Ithaca, New York.
Namgyal Monastery Institute of Buddhist Studies :
The internationally famed Namgyal Monastery Institute of Buddhist Studies is the Buddhist learning run by Namgyal Monastery. It offers thirteen year courses in Tantra and Sutra. The Monastery has a resident faculty which includes the spiritual leaders of Tibet along with His Holiness Dalai Lama. Young lamas have to qualify the entrance examination to get admission. Now an abridged three-year course is offered to people irrespective of caste, religion.
